Top 5 RV Storage and Organization Tips You Wish You Knew Sooner

Going on a holiday on your RV? Living on the road for a few months? Storage can be quite a problem when you have a limited space and when you’re always on the go.

If you’re a camper, the amount of things you need to store can quickly add up. Apart from your clothing, toiletries and other personal items, there’s your sleeping gear, kitchen gear and other outdoor gear you need to organize and put away inside your vehicle.

When it comes to packing and storage, you need to be smart. The goal is to have a clean, comfortable and organized space free of clutter. There should be a place for everything, and everything should be in its place.

Try these 10 awesome RV storage tips the next time you’ll be on the road:

Take ONLY what you need

This can be really tricky, especially to new campers. Naturally, you would want to come fully prepared for just about any situation outdoors, leading you to pack a lot of unnecessary stuff that would be useful “just in case”. But these little things quickly add up and you end up not using them.

While preparedness is extremely important, camping is all about simplifying. Aim to take only what you will actually use outdoors (you’ll get better at figuring this out after some time). So when packing for your RV, lay out all the items you intend to bring and try to cut all those in half. You don’t really need those extra saucepans or that back up set of plates!

Separate your gear into categories

Nothing is more frustrating than having to fumble through a big box just to find your matches or a small piece of cooking gear. Save your time and energy by keeping your things organized.

To make everything easier, you should know exactly where everything is and be able to get an item as soon as you need it. Organize your things in categories and place them in separate containers – you can have one for kitchen gear, sleeping gear, bathroom items, clothing and personal items, gadgets and tools, miscellaneous items and other categories you’ll need.

Make use of tubs

When storing gear in a camper, tubs are your best friend. Opt for the large, waterproof kind. They will help secure your gear and make sure nothing rattles when you’re on the road. Best of all, they’re stackable – they save space they’re easy to load and unload from your vehicle. They’re easy to store, too! Depending on the storage and space in your RV like drawers or cupboard space, you can get flexible or smaller tubs to fit in those spaces.

When your gear is organized and stored into tubs, you’ll be able to find anything you need quickly. Even kids won’t have a problem with this system!

Take advantage of space-saving storage items

Manufacturers are constantly coming up with awesome new items that would make a consumer’s life easier and more convenient wherever they are. A motorhome is full of nooks and crannies – there are plenty of space wasted and you have to be creative about how you might be able to use these small spaces for storage.

This is where the beauty of modern products come in. To keep your surfaces neat, you can use a swivel drawer (clamps onto any surface) to store the small things like pens, gadgets or your mail. If your RV doesn’t have closets, you can opt to use a wall-mounted clothes hanger which folds away when not in use. You can also look into pop up trash bins, collapsible laundry baskets, drawer organizers, hanging organizers and many other space-saving storage products.

Items that have dual use like storage ottomans also help. Our Camping Lantern not only provides long-lasting illumination but can also be used to charge your mobile phone and other gadgets.

Speaking of awesome items, stackable and pull-out storage can be very beneficial for RV owners, too. There are plenty of pull-out drawers and storage containers in various sizes that you can easily add to unutilized space in your motorhome like under the bed, under  cupboard or under a table.

Like we mentioned earlier, stackable storage are ideal for small spaces as you can store plenty of gear without taking up too much floor space. But you can also do this not only with your gear but to smaller items or even with your food as well.

Maximize your wall space

Smart storage is all about being creative. If you don’t want to take too much of your floor space or you want to keep the surfaces of your RV clutter-free, utilize your wall space! It’s a good space to hang your keys, your hats and even your brooms and mops. Use sticky Velcro to secure your remote controls and your walkie talkies while moving.

There are many types of hooks (screw on or stick on) which you can easily attach to your wall and can be used for any purpose!

When you’re packing and storing your gear in an RV, it’s ideal to make sure that every and bit of space is utilized to keep the main area neat, organized and clutter-free. It’s hard to enjoy a vacation when you’re constantly trying to look for or fix your things while on a trip!

Our Camping Lantern makes a great gift for friends and family who love camping, hiking, fishing, backpacking or any other outdoor activity. Treat yourself to one, too! Shop here now!
