There’s nothing wrong with sticking to tradition – enjoying a feast with family and friends at Christmas Eve and opening presents in the morning. But there’s also nothing wrong with doing something different for the holidays and trying new things!

Go out! While it’s too cold for many to go camping, hiking or any other outdoor activities, it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy being outside. During Christmas season, there are plenty of events, festivals or markets around the country (and around the world!) that one can enjoy.

Nothing would feel more festive than wrapping up, strolling in a night market buying Christmas treats and presents or sipping your holiday beverage at a fun Christmas event. Not to mention being surrounded by gorgeous Christmas lights!

Here are 10 Christmas events that are worth spending the holidays outside for:

Considered to be one of the country’s best Holiday Markets, Washington’s Downtown Holiday Market starts from mid-November and runs all the way through Christmas Eve. It features an array of vendors and exhibitors offering food items, clothing, jewelry, arts and crafts, and many more. You can visit the market at F Street in Washington (outside the National Portrait Gallery). Opens at noon and closes at 8pm daily.

This year, two of the theme park’s most popular roller coasters will be open for the first time all throughout the event ending on January 2. And if you have time to explore the state of Virginia a little bit more, head on over to the Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum and the American Revolution Museum for A Colonial Christmas, wherein you can experience Holidays traditions in the 17th and 18th centuries.
